KANYAKUMARI



KANYAKUMARI  - is a beautiful town located at the southern most tip of India.Kanyakumari is one of the few towns in India where one can hear many of the different languages of India spoken on the street. The top attractions in Kanyakumari are :


·         Vivekananda Memorial, built on the Vivekananda Rock where the charismatic philosopher Swami Vivekananda meditated and transformed himself. The unique, structure was built in 1970 and is a blend of various architectural styles of India.


·         Close to the Vivekananda Rock is another rock called Sripada Parai meaning the rock that has been blessed by the touch of the feet of the goddess.


·         A 133 feet (41 m) tall statue of Tamil saint–poet Thiruvalluvar, one of the biggest statues in Asia is another major highlight.


·         Kamaraj Memorial  is the memorial of late politician Kamaraj, also known as "King Maker of India", From a humble background he rose to become the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu through sheer hard work and political acumen. As a tribute to the freedom fighter and "Perunthalaivar" (meaning great leader) this memorial was constructed.


·         Guganathaswamy Temple is a 1000-year-old temple said to have been built by Raja Raja Chola. The architectural style of the Cholas is quite evident in this temple.


·         Vattakottai or the Circular Fort is a granite fort built by King Marthanda Varma. It was built to serve as protection from surging enemy armies.


·         Suchindram temple here is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. There is also a huge 18-ft high Hanuman statue. It has a unique bas-relief carving of Vinayaki or the Female form  of lord Vinayaka.


·         King Marthanda Varma built Udayagiri Fort in the 18th century.
